I absolutely love this idea! I think it would be sweet to have your students write little stories about all your characters. It's a great opportunity to use their imaginations
Statistics: Posted by yukinohana — Wed Feb 06, 2002 5:37 pm

Hey man, glad you see the vision I'm trying to inspire in these kids. I'm keeping up proper terminology with them and have started giving them quizzes each week so they can really get it down. Without getting into too many details, David comes from a troubled home, so I have to balance making the classroom a stable place for him and letting him really enjoy the game. Just one of the hard parts of being a teacher.
Statistics: Posted by Jackson74 — Mon Dec 24, 2001 11:22 pm

Hi Jackson, glad you're introducing this great game to a new generation! Just a couple things here:

Theresa’s dad was a DM for a campaign I did a few years ago

FYI, in Mycelica the gamemaster is called "the Emissary of the Stars." Not a huge deal of course, but terminology is important.

You also mentioned that your kids had characters named "Damien Doomathor" and "Spock." Now, Spock, I can let go since it's a reference to the classics (check out my forum sig ) but "Damien Doomathor?" That's just not really in keeping with the setting. I get it, they're kids, but I feel like you're really missing an opportunity to show them the value of integrating their own ideas with an existing fictional setting.
Statistics: Posted by mothers_1st_son — Thu Dec 20, 2001 1:43 am

Update: Week 2

We had a three hour session today, and I think the kids’ parents should be paying me. Damien Doomathor keeps trying to shoot the other characters with his “laser gun”. I think he thought this would be more like Star Wars. Spock and Starshine are the most well-behaved but they are really struggling with the rules, not helped by Xenavee who has made it her personal mission to torment me and the whole ship. I hoped that Theresa would be helpful in teaching the other kids but she instead is using all her knowledge of the game to find loopholes in every scenario I present. She talked the group out of their first combat encounter with something she found about “Chowlu stereotypes” and so I’m not getting many chances to do rolls with the other kids. In all my preparation for this, I somehow forgot I would be running a game with sixth graders.

–
Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Hello friends,
My name is Mr. Jackson, and I teach 6th grade science. I’m really passionate about getting the next generation interested in Mycelica, so I started an after school club at the middle school to run a campaign. So far, four awesome kids have signed up and made characters. I want to document our progress here to hopefully help other educators learn how they can get kids into this incredible game.

Here’s the characters my students made:
Starshine Brightwillow (played by Ashley, age 11): Lyelli Entente Healer
Spock (it made him really happy) (played by Aaron, age 12): Komore, Professional, Researcher
Damien Doomathor (played by David, age 11): Human, Expansion, Bridge Crew
Xenavee Yggbazil (played by Theresa, age 12): Pleuryke, Sub Rosa, Diplomat

Theresa’s dad was a DM for a campaign I did a few years ago, so she knows some of how the game works. Hopefully she can help guide the other students, too! I’ll keep everyone posted as we go!

–
Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember.
